After 12 years of turning Bucks County Playhouse from a struggling historic theater into one of the region’s most vibrant cultural destinations, Alexander Fraser is taking his final bow on his own terms, writes Earl Hopkins for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Fraser wrapped up his time as producing director this weekend with the opening of South Pacific, a fitting close for a leader who built his legacy on big, emotionally resonant productions.
When Fraser arrived in 2014, both the Playhouse and the town of New Hope were still finding their footing. The theater had only recently reopened following a major restoration and the loss of Actors’ Equity union status due to serious debt in 2010.
Alongside producing partners Robyn Goodman and Josh Fiedler, Fraser set about rebuilding not just the theater, but the community around it.
Annual attendance more than doubled over Fraser’s tenure, climbing from just under 40,000 patrons in 2014 to more than 85,000 in 2025.
Subscription memberships also grew substantially, and what had once been a seasonal operation evolved into a year-round producing organization.
Productions like Steel Magnolias, Anastasia, and Bridges of Madison County drew audiences from across the region and helped fuel economic growth in New Hope, where restaurants, shops, and local businesses all felt the ripple effects.
But Fraser is leaving while the momentum is still building, and he’s clear-eyed about why.
“I learned early on to leave while on top,” Fraser said. “I’m really happy this all worked out. The theater is doing great and there’s a great person coming in after me.”
That person is theater veteran BT McNicholl, who will succeed Fraser as producing artistic director.
Fraser plans to move on to new musical development and nightclub experiences following his departure from the Playhouse, while also spending time relaxing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
