One of the Philadelphia region’s most recognizable sports bar brands just landed in Newtown, and it’s filling a vacancy that locals have had their eye on for months, writes Michele Haddon in the Bucks County Courier Times.
P.J. Whelihan’s Pub + Restaurant opened at the Village at Newtown shopping center on Eagle Road last week, and the timing couldn’t have been better with Flyers and Sixers playoff fever still running hot across Bucks County.
The new restaurant officially opened May 4 inside the former Iron Hill Brewery space, a location that had sat empty since Iron Hill abruptly closed in 2025.
Iron Hill had been a Village at Newtown fixture since 2019 before shutting down and declaring bankruptcy, leaving a noticeable hole in one of Bucks County’s busiest retail and dining corridors.
PJW Restaurant Group wasted little time filling it. And for them, Newtown was never a fallback option. It was the plan all along.
“If you look at our locations on a map, Bucks County is a big hole,” said David Chojnowski, Vice President of Development. “We have been looking to come here for quite some time, and Newtown was the bullseye.”
The group already operates a location in Plumstead Township near Doylestown.
With 25 P.J. Whelihan’s locations stretching from Harrisburg to Washington Township, the Newtown opening adds another anchor to a well-established regional footprint.
The formula is familiar and it works. The menu centers on the chain’s famous wings, available classic or boneless with a choice of 10 sauces ranging from mild to scorpion and flamin’ pickleback.
Burgers, cheesesteaks, sandwiches, salads, and a wide selection of draft beer round out the offerings.
TVs throughout the space keep the game-day energy front and center.
The buildout made smart use of the existing Iron Hill structure, speeding up the transition.
“This space gave us a strong foundation to build on, and our focus has been making it feel like PJs from the moment guests walk in,” said Clint Wagner, Vice President of Operations.
“Just as important is the team behind it. We’ve built a group that’s focused on great hospitality, consistency, and creating an environment guests want to come back to.”
