The interior overhaul of the Newtown Theatre, built in 1831, was unveiled in a Hollywood-style celebration of local luminaries and politicians. The renovation project brought a fresh look, better accessibility, and more comfortable seating. Jeff Warner, for The Reporter, explained how it’s now just the ticket for area movie lovers.

Newtown Borough Mayor Charles Swartz commented: “It’s wonderful to have this reopened and to have the theatre back in operation.”

The mayor reminisced about the role the spot played in his youth. His first memory of it dates to a 1962 Christmas party that included cartoons at the Newtown.

“Everyone got a candy cane,” he recalled.

The movie house’s executive director, Andy Smith, is excited and proud of the new gleam brought to the property.

“I hearken back to the plaque out front that says this place is the ‘center of entertainment in Newtown.’ And honestly, I can’t imagine how it’s not going to keep that title,” he said.
