Despite the rise of AI-generated resumes and automated applications, real human connections still create the most valuable opportunities.
No matter your role – job seeker, entrepreneur, employed professional, veteran, or student – networking remains essential for career and business growth. However, networking has changed, even in just the past few years.
The modern networking strategy is now a blend of:
- In-person relationship building
- Online visibility
- Strategic LinkedIn optimization
- Intentional follow-up
- Data-driven connection management
- Personal branding
And if your LinkedIn profile isn’t optimized before you attend an event, you may miss opportunities before the conversation even begins.
Networking Is More Than “Collecting Contacts”
Too many people attend networking events with the wrong mindset:
- collecting business cards,
- adding random LinkedIn connections,
- or trying to “sell” themselves immediately.
Networking is about developing real relationships.
The strongest professional relationships are often built through:
- trust,
- consistency,
- visibility,
- credibility,
- and meaningful follow-up.
Key takeaway: Define networking goals before events to make connections more strategic and valuable.
That means before attending an event, you should ask:
- Who do I want to meet?
- Why do I want to meet them?
- How can I help them?
- What conversations would be valuable?
- What outcomes would make this event successful?
Key takeaway: Approaching networking with strategy separates meaningful connections from casual socializing.
Your LinkedIn Profile Is Your Digital Handshake
Here is the reality many professionals overlook:
People will look you up on LinkedIn before, during, and after networking events.
Your profile becomes your:
- online business card,
- credibility check,
- portfolio,
- resume,
- networking hub,
- and follow-up tool.
If someone meets you at an event and visits your profile only to find:
- an outdated headline,
- no professional photo,
- a vague About section,
- no keywords,
- no accomplishments,
- or no clear value proposition…
…the opportunity can disappear quickly.
Your LinkedIn profile should immediately answer:
- Who are you?
- What do you do?
- What problems do you solve?
- Who do you help?
- What industries do you serve?
- Why should someone connect with you?
This is especially important in today’s AI-driven search environment, where LinkedIn functions as a searchable database.
Optimize Before You Attend the Event
One of the biggest networking mistakes professionals make is waiting until after an event to update their LinkedIn profile.
Instead, prepare beforehand.
Before attending a networking event:
- Update your headline to include keywords and your unique selling proposition
- Refresh your About section
- Add recent accomplishments and metrics
- Upload a professional headshot
- Ensure your contact information is current
- Add a banner image aligned with your brand
- Review your Featured section
- Customize your LinkedIn URL
- Turn on Creator Mode if appropriate
- Make sure your profile photo matches your real appearance
Why?
Because networking today often happens in real time.
Someone may scan your LinkedIn QR code from the mobile app, search for your name immediately, or review your profile before deciding whether to continue the relationship.
The Follow-Up Is Where the Magic Happens
Networking success rarely comes from the first conversation.
Key takeaway: Thoughtful, intentional follow-up on LinkedIn is where networking relationships deepen, and opportunities unfold.
This is where LinkedIn becomes incredibly powerful.
After meeting someone:
- send a personalized LinkedIn invitation,
- reference your conversation,
- mention where you met,
- and identify a shared interest or takeaway.
If you have a premium LinkedIn account, customized invitations become even more valuable because they allow you to create context and familiarity immediately.
Instead of:
“I’d like to add you to my professional network.”
Try:
“Great meeting you at the networking mixer discussing AI and workforce trends. I enjoyed learning more about your work in healthcare operations and would love to stay connected.”
That personalization matters.
LinkedIn relationship-building experts consistently emphasize the importance of personalized outreach, mutual interests, and intentional engagement to achieve higher rates for connections.
Networking Is Both In-Person AND Online
Some professionals prefer online networking.
Others only value in-person events.
The strongest strategy combines both.
In-Person Networking Helps You:
- Build trust faster
- Read body language
- Develop rapport
- Create memorable conversations
- Increase relationship depth
Online Networking Helps You:
- Maintain visibility
- Stay top-of-mind
- Continue conversations
- Share expertise
- Expand geographic reach
- Build long-term credibility
Key takeaway: Combining online and in-person networking yields the strongest, most enduring professional relationships.
Networking Is Not Just for Job Seekers
One of the biggest misconceptions about networking is that it is only for unemployed professionals.
In reality:
- Entrepreneurs network for partnerships and clients
- Employed professionals network for career management
- Veterans network for civilian career transition
- Students network for internships and mentorship
- Executives network for visibility and influence
- Business owners network for growth opportunities
Key takeaway: Networking acts as career insurance – building new opportunities before they are publicly available.
Because opportunities often appear long before jobs are publicly posted.
The Hidden Advantage of Networking Events
Many people walk into networking events hoping to “meet everyone.”
That is usually ineffective.
The best networkers attend events with intentionality.
They identify:
- target industries,
- strategic partners,
- hiring managers,
- referral sources,
- mentors,
- collaborators,
- or potential clients.
Key takeaway: Organize and target your networking approach to maximize connections and long-term value from events.
The Power of a Mega Networking Mixer Strategy
On Tuesday, I attended two great in-person networking events.
The first was breakfast in Broomall with the Delco Meets 4 Business Networking Group, which is a meetup group. There were over 30 attendees last week and about 20 this week (probably due to the PGA traffic).
In the evening, I attended the mega networking mixer with over 80 registrants hosted in the beautiful Sajer Hall of Alleva Funeral Home in Paoli by the Paoli Business & Professional Association, Wayne Business Association, Berwyn-Devon Business Association, Malvern Business & Professional Association, and Ardmore Business Association.
It was a fantastic evening of connections, conversations, and community collaboration with many guests exploring the benefits of membership. The night provided opportunities to mix, mingle, and make things happen.
When looking at networking opportunities, what are some considerations:
- Number of attendees
- Types of businesses represented
- Industries involved
- Success stories
- Sponsorships
- Strategic partnerships formed
- Key takeaways
- Notable conversations
- Referral opportunities created
One particularly effective strategy at large networking events is to use a Google Form and a Google Sheet to manage information.
Why?
Because visibility creates strategy.
When attendees can review a visible attendee list beforehand, they can:
- identify ideal connections,
- research attendees on LinkedIn,
- prepare conversation starters,
- prioritize networking goals,
- and maximize their time intentionally.
Key takeaway: Use digital tools and attendee lists to transform event interactions into meaningful, purposeful networking outcomes.
Digital networking tools, forms, and attendee-tracking systems are increasingly becoming part of modern networking event strategy because they improve organization, follow-up, and relationship management.
Networking Is a Long-Term Investment
One of the most important lessons professionals need to understand is this:
The ROI of networking is often delayed.
A conversation today may become:
- a client next year,
- a referral six months later,
- a partnership opportunity,
- a speaking engagement,
- a job lead,
- or a future collaboration.
Networking is focused on relationships.
Strong connections develop over time.
Key takeaway: Networking is a long-term process – relationship-building today leads to future professional growth and opportunities.
Final Thoughts
AI may be changing the hiring process.
Automation may be changing business development.
Algorithms may influence visibility.
But people, not algorithms, make hiring decisions.
People still refer people.
People still trust people.
Your ability to:
- communicate your value,
- build relationships,
- stay visible,
- and strategically follow up
Key takeaway: Building relationships, maintaining visibility, and following up set you apart in today’s career landscape.
So before your next networking event, ask yourself:
Is your LinkedIn profile ready for the conversations you are about to have?
