If you’re feeling frustrated or unsettled in your career or are out of work, you might feel compelled to quickly update and optimize your LinkedIn profile.
You dive in, update your resume, give your (likely neglected) LinkedIn profile some love, scan job boards, and start applying for jobs.
On the surface, it feels productive. You’re doing something!
To be fair, if you’ve lost your job, there may be financial pressures and uncertainty fueling your
process, so the sooner you regain stability, the better.
However, before you dive in further, consider this: there’s an important step you might be missing – one that could be a game-changer not only in your job search but also in your long-term career: gaining clarity.
According to co-author, Mardee Handler, “Without a clear understanding of what you’re looking for, it’s easy to fall into a cycle of reactive decision-making. You let your job search lead you, rather than leading your job search.”
Applying for roles that look appealing at first glance might seem like the right way to move forward. Tailoring your resume to each job posting may seem like something you should be doing based on logic or others’ recommendations.
Sometimes this approach works. You find opportunities that excite you and move through the job search to an offer with ease, and, best of all, land your dream job!
More often, though, urgency-fueled, reactive rather than proactive decision-making doesn’t yield these results. Instead, you find yourself deflated and defeated. Sadly, this feeling can last until you accept an offer.
Every ending is an opportunity for a new beginning. Why not position yourself for a new career chapter that’ll bring you joy and fulfillment?
So, what should you do instead? Pause, but don’t hit the brakes!
Slow down to speed up.
Does this mean you should stop your job search until you have everything perfectly figured out?
Not necessarily. Instead, use this time to reflect, even if it’s just briefly, while keeping your search active.
For starters, there’s no such thing as perfection. (Sorry.)
Even a bit of clarity about your ideal role, industry, or environment can improve your job search. Knowing where you’re most likely to thrive can enhance the quality of your job search.
When you know the direction you’re headed, whether it’s a small pivot or a major change, your
actions become more intentional. Your resume becomes more targeted and more impactful.
You become more confident and more authentically engaged in interviews.
So what does it actually mean to get clear?
Career Clarity = Inner Insight + External Understanding
Career clarity doesn’t come from overthinking or a single lightning-bolt moment of inspiration.
You have to put in the effort to gain a deeper level of self-awareness and a clearer understanding of real-world opportunities in your field(s) of interest.
The internal work is about you.
It involves understanding your abilities, strengths, interests, values, and how you want your work and life to be. This internal work forms the foundation for everything that follows. Without it, you may choose roles that look good on paper but don’t truly fit you.
This is where patterns start to emerge. What energizes you? What drains you? Where do you
naturally excel? What kind of environment helps you do your best work? These insights create
direction, not in a rigid, this is the one perfect job way, but in a grounded, informed way.
While internal clarity lays the groundwork, external clarity helps you put your insights into context.
External clarity comes from understanding what’s actually out there: the opportunities available, the competitive landscape, and how your strengths and interests could translate across various roles and industries.
This step helps you connect your goals with where you can best use your unique strengths, and leads to a more focused job search and greater career satisfaction.
Career research involves learning about different roles, industries, and prospective employers.
You can pivot or reinvent. There is a difference.
If you’re considering a small pivot, for example, maybe you do the same type of work in the same industry – but with a different employer where the culture is more closely aligned with your values. You could stay at the same company while seeking a new role in a different department.
There are many websites where you can learn about jobs and industries. One of the best places to start is O*NET. It’s a comprehensive resource sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. O*NET provides detailed information on occupations, including required education, knowledge, skills, abilities, salary averages, and career outlooks.
Having informational interviews with people who can give you practical insights into the day-to-day responsibilities of a role and/or the realities of an industry can be incredibly illuminating.
Firsthand accounts can help you learn about the pros and cons of jobs you might be considering. They can also reveal how different career paths might unfold over time.
Your goal is simple: gain clarity to drive a successful job search and lasting career satisfaction!
When you unite inside insight and outside understanding, something clicks, and you’ll feel it!
Excitement replaces dread. Energy replaces lethargy. Calm replaces overwhelm.
Once you have a clearer focus, you can update your resume and then your LinkedIn profile, and apply for roles with greater confidence.
Best of all, you lead your job search and career. Not the other way around.
You empower yourself to look for and land a job that aligns with your gifts and goals. That job is one that truly fits who you are … and where you want to go.
So slow down and get clarity, and then you can speed up!
