How to Prepare for a Career Fair

Show up prepared at a career fair. Stand out. One conversation can change everything.
Great Careers Logo

Career fairs can open doors at any age and career stage. Whether you are a student attending your first event, a professional exploring new opportunities, someone re-entering the workforce, or considering a career pivot, a career fair can be a smart place to build connections, gather information, and uncover opportunities.

Too many people attend career fairs unprepared. They show up, walk around, collect brochures, and leave without making a real impression. A stronger strategy can help you stand out.

At our nonprofit networking events, we see this: preparation and strong conversation skills matter more than just showing up. Practice different elevator pitches for different audiences.

Use this Who, What, When, Where, Why, How framework to prepare for your next career fair.

WHO Should Attend a Career Fair?

Career fairs are valuable for:

  • High school and college students exploring careers or internships
  • Recent graduates seeking entry-level opportunities
  • Mid-career professionals exploring growth opportunities
  • Career changers and relaunchers researching new industries
  • Experienced professionals expanding their network
  • Entrepreneurs seeking partnerships or talent
  • Anyone wanting to improve confidence and networking skills

If you need visibility, information, or relationships, a career fair can help you get them.

WHAT Is a Career Fair?

A career fair is an event where employers, recruiters, schools, nonprofits, and organizations meet candidates in one place.

Depending on the event, you may find:

  • Full-time jobs
  • Part-time roles
  • Internships
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Industry information
  • Networking contacts
  • Resume advice
  • Career resources
  • Nonprofit resources

It’s a live marketplace for opportunities.

WHEN Should You Prepare?

Preparation should begin before the event, not in the parking lot.

1 Week Before

  • Research participating employers
  • Update your resume
  • Refresh your LinkedIn profile
  • Prepare questions for employers
  • Choose professional attire
  • Ensure you have enough business or networking cards

1 Day Before

  • Print resumes
  • Charge your phone
  • Map your route or test virtual login access
  • Review target employers
  • Practice your introduction

Day Of

  • Arrive early
  • Bring energy and confidence
  • Smile and engage people

WHERE Should You Focus Your Time?

Not every table deserves equal attention.

Use a three-tier strategy:

Tier 1: Priority Targets

Organizations you most want to meet.

Tier 2: Exploration Targets

Companies you want to learn more about.

Tier 3: Practice Targets

Organizations where you can warm up your conversation skills.

This approach is often used at networking events: practice first, then approach your highest-priority conversations with sharper focus and a more relaxed demeanor.

WHY Do Career Fairs Matter?

Many opportunities come through conversations before formal applications. People hire people, not bots. Networking is key to career success.

Career fairs help you:

  • Build human connections
  • Learn insider information
  • Practice presenting yourself
  • Discover hidden opportunities
  • Gain confidence
  • Expand your professional network
  • Make recruiters and hiring managers remember your name

Sometimes one conversation changes everything. How can you be memorable?

HOW to Succeed at a Career Fair

1. Prepare Your 15 to 30-Second Introduction

Include:

  • Your name
  • What you do or study
  • What interests you
  • What you seek

Examples:

Hi, I’m Mariam, and I’m seeking a part-time summer opportunity to gain real-world experience, apply my skills, and continue learning before starting college this fall to study software engineering. (High School Student)

Hi, I’m Rajiv, and I am a college junior seeking a marketing communications internship where I can apply my creativity, strengthen my writing and digital media skills, and gain hands-on experience supporting real campaigns and brand growth. (College Student Seeking Internship)

“Hi, I’m Jordan. I have experience in customer service and project coordination, and I’m exploring operations or client-facing opportunities.” (Job Seeker with Experience)

“Hi, I’m Lynne, and I guide you to your keywords to beat the bots. In other words, I write resumes and LinkedIn profiles so you can get found with the right keywords.” (Entrepreneur)

2. Ask Better Questions

Instead of asking, “Are you hiring?”

Try:

  • What skills are most valuable at your company?
  • What types of candidates stand out?
  • What advice would you give someone entering this field?
  • What upcoming opportunities should I watch for?

Good questions create stronger conversations. Just as you prepare for an interview, you need to prepare questions for a career fair conversation.

3. Bring a Resume—But Don’t Lead With It

Use your resume as a support tool, not a substitute for conversation.

People remember interaction more than paper. You might wait for someone to ask for it before you offer.

4. Show Energy and Professionalism

At networking events, one common lesson is this: people are drawn to positivity, curiosity, and professionalism.

That means:

  • Make eye contact
  • Smile
  • Listen actively
  • Be respectful of time
  • Thank people sincerely
  • If you are wearing a nametag, wear it on your right side
  • When engaging in a handshake, give a firm, pleasant handshake

5. Take Notes Immediately

After each conversation, grab a business card if available, or jot down:

  • Person’s name
  • Company
  • Key discussion points
  • Next steps

This helps with follow-up later.

6. Follow Up Within 24-48 Hours

Send a short LinkedIn connection request or email thanking them for their time.
