Doylestown’s Lucatelli’s Pizzeria Brings Its Dave Portnoy-Approved Pies to Newtown

Lucatelli’s Pizzeria is continuing its rise across Bucks County, opening a second location in Newtown, according to a new article from TheKeystone.

The story behind Lucatelli’s starts in Ambler, where owner Dave Schiano learned to make pizza at age 11 at his father’s Maple Glen Pizza.

He eventually opened his own shop called Lucatelli’s in Philadelphia, only to watch COVID shut it down before it ever found its footing.

That setback turned out to be a blessing.

Schiano regrouped and opened a new Lucatelli’s in Doylestown in 2022, tucked into the Mercer Square Shopping Center.

Within months, it had built a devoted local following.

Then in 2023, Dave Portnoy stopped in for one of his One Bite pizza reviews and gave it a 7.8, one of the higher scores in the series.

The already-busy shop was suddenly swamped. Lines stretched out the door and the kitchen ran out of dough.

In less than two years, Schiano had to take over the neighboring storefront, adding 1,200 square feet, a prep kitchen, a new 32-pie oven, and 60 seats just to keep up.

The shop’s cheesesteak went on to win Best of Bucks in 2024.

The new Newtown location takes over the former Marco’s Pizzeria space in the Village at Newtown South shopping center on South Eagle Road.

The grand opening on April 25 drew lines out the door, with the shop selling out by mid-afternoon.

The menu features many of the same favorites that built the brand, including specialty pies, cheesesteaks, roast pork, garlic knots, and Grandma-style pizza, all made fresh daily.

“We thought we were going to be a one-store operation,” Schiano said. “The community really supported us and kept us busy.”

And Schiano is not done. A third Lucatelli’s is already in the works, back in Ambler at his father’s old Maple Glen Pizza location. Full circle.
