To boost ridership and revenue, SEPTA is seeking apartment and retail development near its stations, and Langhorne Station is one of its latest targets, writes Thomas Fitzgerald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Working closely with local government and the community, the transit agency has initiated plans to develop a concept for a 1.7-acre site adjacent to Langhorne Station.
The move was well received by local officials, who have been seeking a project to drive revitalization in the region. SEPTA’s Langhorne Station is located centrally among Penndel, Middletown, Langhorne Manor, and Langhorne Borough.
“That corridor really looks run down, has a feeling of a place that used to be something, but isn’t anymore,” said Mark B. Moffam, the acting county treasurer and former Penndel Council member.
Approximately 90 residents attended a SEPTA open house at Penndel Borough Hall on March 23 to review potential redevelopment concepts near Langhorne Station. Attendees were invited to share their ideas on a whiteboard with the prompt, “What do you want from the development? What are your goals?”
Penndel Councilmember Gary Nickerson voiced his support for an apartment project.
“This could draw other development to the borough,“ he said. ”Once somebody goes first.”
