Phoenixville barber shop Iron’s Edge Barber Company is helping under-supported employees find long-term success, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
The shop hires barbers who may struggle to find work elsewhere. The team is made up of formerly incarcerated residents going through re-entry, individuals struggling with substance use, and formerly homeless people seeking stable employment.
Manager Justin Kyle has worked as a barber for twenty years. After a struggle with substance use and a period in prison, Kyle found stable success by returning to barbering.
He has now been sober for seven years. He shared that his fellow Iron’s Edge team members support each other as they find stability in their personal and professional lives.
Kyle also shared that the team hopes to grow the business to help more struggling community members find work.
Barber Timothy Graham completed a nine-month barber program while in prison. After experiencing homelessness in Kensington, Graham also found long-term employment and support at Iron’s Edge.
About the shop and his line of work, Graham said, “Being a barber, it has helped me stay clean and given me such a structure and good people to be around. Especially at Iron’s Edge.”
