VondernLust: The Grange Estate is a 300-Year-Old Havertown Landmark Hiding in Plain Sight

The Historic Grange Estate, an overlooked Delaware County gem dating to 1682, is filled with history, charm, and surprises.

I was born and raised in Haverford Township, and somehow it took me until my 40s to finally visit the historic Grange Estate.

I’ve driven past it my whole life, but never stepped inside until recently. The first time I wandered onto the property while on a run, I felt like I’d stumbled into another century. The stone walls, the gardens, the old carriage house it all gave me this little “I’m back in Europe” moment.

So of course I had to learn more.

Turns out The Grange dates all the way back to 1682, with the earliest part of the mansion built in the early 1700s. In 1782, Philadelphia merchant John Ross renamed it The Grange and hosted well-known guests, including George Washington.

One of my favorite things about living in this area is how much history is hiding right in plain sight. The Grange Estate is such a perfect example.

The Friends of the Grange keep the property active with tours and special events throughout the year. Admission is incredibly affordable—$5 for adults, $1 for kids—which makes it an easy stop for anyone looking for something different to do.

The holiday season is especially magical. You can tour the decorated rooms, check out the model-train display in the carriage house, and do a little shopping at the Grange vintage shop.

Walking through The Grange made me realize how many places like this exist throughout our region, spots that aren’t always on our radar but are packed with stories, charm, and character.

And you truly never know what you’re going to uncover. I learned Havertown once had its own amusement park in the early 1900s. Who knew?

Exploring The Grange reminded me that there’s always something new to discover… even in a town you’ve known your whole life.

If You Go, Here’s What You Need to See

If you’re planning a visit to The Grange, give yourself time to wander. This isn’t a rush-through kind of place.
