This Candy Bar Has Been Made in Philadelphia For More Than 100 Years

Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, which first came onto the scene back in 1917, is still being manufactured and produced in Philadelphia.

In 1917, during World War I, Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews were born out of necessity and more than 100 years later, the candy bar can still be found in snack aisles, writes Christie Ileto for 6abc.

While people now liken them to being the hometown hero of candy bars, Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews weren’t always that.

According to director of marketing Keith Domalewski, Peanut Chews were developed as a high-protein and high-energy ration for troops.

In other words, they could be considered the original candy bar.

However, that evolved over time.

“And so once the war was over, there was a ready market for folks to enjoy that brand here, not as a ration but as a treat,” Domalewski added.

Peanut Chews are made with a combination of crunchy peanuts, gooey and chewy molasses, and dark chocolate.

The same original recipe continues to be used today, with two flavors available: Original Dark and Milk Chocolatey.

Domalewski said the company goes through about 40,000 pounds of peanuts each week.

The Philadelphia factory that continues to manufacture the candy produces about 1.2 million Peanut Chews annually.
