This Sunday, Nov. 2, a group of over two hundred cyclists will be riding through the streets of Doylestown for the annual “Cranksgiving” event, writes Ed Doyle for TAPinto Doylestown.
During the event, bikers will visit local grocery stores, purchasing nonperishable items to be donated to nearby food banks.
Cranksgiving is organized by Bike Works, a bicycle shop with locations in Newtown and Doylestown.
According to co-owner Brian Boger, around 250 individuals are expected to participate. The donations will be given to the Bucks County Housing Group, which will send the items to local food pantries.
The cyclists will be followed by a Fred Beans Auto Group box truck, which will transport the items that are purchased.
Boger and co-owner Fran Taloricco have devoted their efforts to combating food insecurity. Since they began the event in 2012, around 119,000 pounds of nonperishable items have been collected.
Food insecurity impacts nine percent of Bucks County’s population and 16 percent of the county’s children. These numbers are anticipated to rise as SNAP payments are paused during the federal government shutdown.
Registration for Cranksgiving will begin at 8:45 AM in Central Bucks West High School’s parking lot. There is no cost to join.
Cyclists will set off at 9:30 AM. The first grocery store visited will be Plumstead Township’s Giant on Route 611, followed by Doylestown’s Acme Markets and Weis Markets.
