As part of their Homecoming 250 celebrations, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps recently visited Bensalem High School to surprise students, reports Nikki DeMentri for CBS News Philadelphia.
Four military helicopters landed on the school’s football field in just one of many events the military branches are holding to celebrate their 250th birthday.
More than 2,000 staff, students and local leaders were gathered at the high school.
The goal of this event was to inspire students, give back to the community and potentially encourage a few to become pilots.
For one of the military leaders in attendance, this was more than just a simple celebration; it was a homecoming.
Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Reed Jr., a Bensalem High School graduate, returned to his alma mater for the first time in 25 years.
“I didn’t appreciate this place when I was here, and so to come full circle and to be back here 25 years later after I raised my right hand is amazing,” Reed said.
Reed graduated in 1997 and joined the Navy in 2000. Last year, he finally returned to his hometown.
“This is a great moment,” he said. “It’s really special for me, and I’m just glad that everyone gets to see how awesome the Navy is and how awesome this place is.”
