Penn Medicine officially recently opened a new research center, a $376 million project that has added eight floors to a seven-story office building housing the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The new levels at 3600 Civic Center Boulevard house teams from the Colton Center for Autoimmunity at Penn, as well as from the university’s High-Throughput Institute for Discovery, a specialized lab that aids in diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases by testing patient samples. Other researchers focused on immune health also occupy the new floors.
The 217,000-square-foot building addition was specifically designed to foster opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations between experts in immune health, autoimmunity, vaccinology, and infectious diseases.
“While we can’t predict exactly what tomorrow will hold, our track record shows we have the creativity and courage to meet it head-on,” said University of Pennsylvania Health System CEO Kevin B. Mahoney. “This space is designed to be a place where the next breakthroughs will be imagined and achieved.”
Alongside the major expansion, Penn’s project included renovations to the first seven floors of the existing office tower.
In 2022, Penn received a $50 million gift from philanthropists Stewart and Judy Colton, which was an integral part of the new Colton Center’s construction.
