Bucks County Teen Affected by Alopecia Advocates for Breaking Its Stigma

Stephanie Milewski, a Bucks County teen diagnosed with alopecia areata is working to break the stigma surrounding the condition.

Stephanie Milewski, a Bucks County teen diagnosed with alopecia areata at age 9, is now working to break the stigma surrounding the condition, writes Tom Sofield for North Penn Now.

Milewski was present when Bucks County Commissioners recently proclaimed September as Alopecia Awareness Month, recognizing the efforts of a local chapter of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. This helps support the almost 7 million Americans affected by the autoimmune condition, which causes hair loss.

“Alopecia awareness is needed to end stigma, increase support, and drive research for better treatments and a cure,” said Milewski during her presentation.

Milewski is active at school in the student council, UNICEF, chorus, and orchestra, and outside of school she participates in 4-H and serves as a camp assistant counselor.

The teen participates in the National Alopecia Areata Foundation’s Legislative Mentor Program, advocating for wig coverage legislation at both state and federal levels. She organizes local walks to raise awareness and funds for alopecia research, including the community-led NAF Walk scheduled for September 27 at 9 a.m. at Neshaminy State Park in Bensalem Township.
