A musical about the Miracle Mop, an iconic product of West Chester-headquartered QVC, is currently running Off-Broadway, writes Tim Teeman for The Daily Beast.
Joy, the musical about Miracle Mop founder Joy Mangano, runs at the Laura Pels Theatre in New York City. The show details the product’s invention and rise to popularity, and Mangano’s personal challenges throughout the process.
In the show, Joy herself appears on QVC. She initially freezes on screen before gaining the confidence to share her product on the network.
The musical also details barriers Mangano faces with misogynistic business executives to ultimately feel self-empowered as an entrepreneur.
Mangano had been inventing products since she was a child. The idea for the self-wringing mop came from her desire to address the lives and challenges of everyday women.
Her life story has been adapted several times over the last decade. The 2015 film Joy chronicled the same story, with Jennifer Lawrence receiving an Oscar nomination for her lead performance.
Mangano’s also released an autobiography in 2017 detailing the story of the Miracle Mop, titled Inventing Joy.
Joy will continue its run through Aug. 17. The show stars Betsy Wolfe in the titular role, a Broadway performer who received a Tony award nomination in 2023 for her role in & Juliet.
Read more about how Joy brings the Miracle Mop’s QVC legacy and its inventor’s inspiring journey to the stage in The Daily Beast.
