The canvassing team at the Woodbourne station platform are trying to let as many SEPTA riders as possible know that it is still not too late to save their train, writes Thomas Fitzgerald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Last week, Transit Forward Philadelphia campaigners encouraged riders at six West Trenton Line Regional Rail stations to ask their state senators to support a state budget that includes new funding for SEPTA.
Without state funding, SEPTA will begin implementing service cuts in August and raise fares by 21.5 percent. On the West Trenton line, wait times between trains would double to two hours during parts of the day. The Trenton Regional Rail line would eventually be eliminated entirely.
“This does not have to happen,” said Stephen Bronskill, coalition manager for Transit Forward Philadelphia. “The legislature can act, and we can avoid it.”
Since May, approximately 150 volunteers affiliated with the group, which advocates for better transit service, have been engaging SEPTA riders at various stations. Other pro-transit organizations in the Philadelphia region, including Transit for All PA!, have recently joined the effort.
