Centennial School District Bus Driver Rich Kutz Retires After 50 Years

Centennial School District bus driver Rich Kutz retires after almost 54 years behind the wheel.

After nearly 54 years behind the wheel of Centennial School District buses, Rich Kutz retired this week at almost 80, writes Kelly Rule for FOX 29 Philadelphia.

On Monday afternoon, he walked to his bus at the transportation yard in Warminster for the last time. Many things have changed since he started driving for the school district. In those times, the bus he drove had no power steering, manual doors, or radios.

“You had a lever here, you’d just reach over and open up the door that way,” said Kutz. “It was a six shift, four in the floor, you had a double clutch, a lot of times you could start off in second gear, which was a break.”

Alongside his decades on the bus, Kutz worked at SPS Technologies for 46 years. The dedicated driver, father of two and grandfather of five, became part of many other families through the years.

But now, he has decided it’s time to call it quits.

“If you take it day by day, you’re here, 53 years,” he said. “You know, it’s hard to believe.”
