Broadway Talent Meets Lancaster Hospitality: Why the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre Is Worth the Trip

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster offers themed dining, top-tier talent, and a one-of-a-kind night out.

Dinner and a show: it’s a classic pairing that feeds both the appetite and the imagination.

But if you’re looking to turn off the television, enjoy a delicious meal out, and discover the talent and charm of Lancaster County, this is your cue to book a table at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre.

Now in full-swing in its 2025 season (which began with Murder for Two in January), this beloved Lancaster venue was recently ranked No. 3 Dinner Theatre on USA Today’s 10Best list. With seating for 320 guests, the theatre combines big-city talent with small-town hospitality, drawing professional actors from New York and providing personalized service that keeps audiences coming back.

“What I hear most from our guests is how impressed they are with the outstanding service of our staff and the professionalism of our actors,” said Nanci Jo Anderson, Marketing Manager. “Many are seasoned performers from New York and beyond, and people are often surprised by the caliber of talent on our stage. Even our newer performers bring great energy to ensemble roles. From the moment guests arrive, we pride ourselves on delivering a warm, personal experience that sets us apart.”

The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre welcomes over 150,000 guests annually — a number that has grown significantly in the years following COVID. Guests can choose between buffet or plated meals, with menus that change to match each show’s theme. The theatre strikes a thoughtful balance between crowd-pleasing Broadway hits and more artistic productions, curating its lineup based on audience feedback and licensing opportunities. Guests attending matinees and evening performances Friday through Wednesday are treated to a buffet meal complete with a fresh salad bar and delectable dessert table. A four-course plated meal is served on Thursday evenings with soup, a choice of salad, an entree, and a specialty dessert.

Though located in the heart of Lancaster County, Dutch Apple continues to attract attention far beyond the local area. Website traffic, email engagement, and even ticket interest come from across the U.S. and around the world. As the team builds its upcoming seasons, they’re seeing increased engagement from places as far away as Canada and Europe.

Lancaster’s growing reputation as a cultural destination plays a big role in this interest. While many visitors initially come for the Amish experience, they’re often delighted to discover a vibrant arts scene, with Dutch Apple and other local theatres offering world-class entertainment in an unexpectedly rich setting.

“It’s fascinating to see where people are engaging with us online; some aren’t even in the U.S.,” said Anderson. “Lancaster County is known for the Amish, yes, but it’s also truly a cultural arts center. When visitors stop by Discover Lancaster’s Visitor’s Center, they’re looking for entertainment, and theatre is high on the list.”

Even local universities have taken note of the theatre’s continued relevance, especially as audiences navigate the rise of streaming platforms.

But what sets Dutch Apple apart is its history rooted in family: The theatre was founded by the Prather family — Tom, Deborah, David, and Will — a true theatrical dynasty with over 50 years of experience producing top-quality shows. The Prathers bring not only professional excellence but also a signature blend of comfort and luxury to every production, making each visit feel both special and welcoming.

Reflecting on this family-like atmosphere of Dutch Apple, Anderson details the thoughtful layout of the theatre, indicating that one of Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre’s biggest draws is its intimate atmosphere.

Seating just 320 guests in a tiered, unobstructed layout, the theatre ensures that every seat offers a clear view of the stage. Guests are seated at tables of two, four, or six, creating a cozy setting perfect for couples, families, or larger groups. Occasionally, when smaller tables aren’t available, guests may be seated together and end up making new connections.

To round out the rest of the 2025 season, Dutch Apple has an exciting lineup, including The Wizard of Oz (Jun. 27-Aug. 9), The Buddy Holly Story (Aug. 15-Sept. 20), A Chorus Line (Sept. 26-Nov. 1), Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn (Nov. 7-Dec. 28), as well as children’s theatre productions Shrek Jr. and Rudolph, and tribute concerts Toby Keith and The Carpenters.

The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre is located at 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. Tickets are available for purchase online, but you can also call the box office at 7178-898-1900. Season memberships are available, as well as group tickets.
