Former Coatesville High School football coach Al Black has passed away at age 88, writes Pete Digiovanni for The Daily Local News.
Black passed away on Friday, Jan. 17 in a Lancaster nursing home.
In addition to being head football coach at Coatesville, Black worked as a college football assistant at Widener University, Millersville University, and Delaware Valley University. He coached his high school team through seven Ches-Mont League titles.
Jack Helm, a former assistant coach to Black, states that Black was a deeply intelligent football coach who remained dedicated to the team’s success. Helm said he was once tasked with scouting out other teams’ scrimmages before a game in Ocean City.
Black is survived by his daughters Donna and Cathy and his wife Marie, who describes her late husband as loving football and family above all else, always connecting with former players of his over the years.
Marie also described Al as intelligent in both football coaching and general trivia, saying, “You surely wanted to be on his side in a trivia contest. He was a wonderful man.”
