Archbishop Ryan High School, NFL Star’s CTE Diagnosis Sheds Light on Athlete Brain Trauma

Former NFL star Frank Wycheck, a Northeast Philly native, was diagnosed with Stage 3 CTE, sparking conversations on athlete safety and brain trauma awareness.

Researchers at Boston University confirmed that Frank Wycheck, an Archbishop Ryan High School star, had Stage 3 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) before his death in December 2023, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Wycheck, who rose to NFL fame with the Tennessee Titans, suffered at least 25 concussions during his career, contributing to significant mental health struggles.

His daughter, Madison Wycheck Nowell, shared, “I pray that families…consider my dad’s story as a cautionary tale regarding the long-term consequences of repetitive brain trauma in athletes.”

Wycheck’s post-retirement challenges, including migraines and depression, mirrored the experiences of many former NFL players.

A recent Harvard survey revealed that 34% of retired players suspect they suffer from CTE.

Wycheck’s family emphasized the importance of raising awareness, calling for greater resources for athletes and their families to manage symptoms and improve safety in contact sports.
