Pennsylvania boasts a legendary athletic legacy, with generations of elite competitors across every major sport – from football and basketball powerhouses to Olympic champions and beyond – cementing the state’s reputation as one of the nation’s greatest hubs for athletic talent, writes Joe Spears for USA TODAY.
Over the decades, the state’s high schools have served as the proving grounds for these talents, fostering a reputation that few can match.
A recent study used survey feedback from students and parents, along with data from the U.S. Department of Education, to determine which Pennsylvania high schools are currently best for athletes. Of the 25 highest-ranked schools, five are in Montgomery County.
La Salle College High School ranked highest among local schools, placing second overall. The Wyndmoor school offers 19 sports.
Ambler’s Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School comes in at eighth place with 14 sports. Lower Merion High School in Ardmore follows at No. 12 with 32 sports. Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington ranks No. 14 with 27 sports.
The list is rounded out by Royersford’s Spring-Ford Senior High School at No. 15 with 25 sports.
