The Italian Market features a great selection of diverse restaurants and represents the cultural tapestry that makes up the city.

The Italian Market in Philadelphia, one of the oldest open-air markets in the nation, offers an incredible selection of culinary delights, from coffee to pastries to fresh meats and so much more, writes Danielle Robles for the Islands.

This iconic 20-block market has been a staple of the city’s culture since the 1880s. With its eclectic mix of amazing finds and hidden gems, it’s the kind of place that’s best explored with a guided tour – such as the chef-led tasting journey from Viator.

The two-hour tour takes you on a tasting journey through the market where you will get to sample the many available delicacies there.

The Italian Market goes beyond being just a foodie destination, however.

It is an important piece of the city’s cultural tapestry. While it began as a hub of businesses and food stalls established by Italian immigrants, it has since morphed into a multicultural culinary scene that perfectly reflects Philadelphia’s rich diversity.

Local favorites include a cheesesteak from Geno’s and a lamb shank massaman curry from Kalaya.

The Italian Market Festival, which usually takes place mid-May, is a true celebration of food, art, and music that should not be missed.
