Doylestown Teen Follows in Footsteps of Her Hero Uncle at Naval Academy
Maggie Borek, a Doylestown native and freshman lacrosse player at the Naval Academy, is following in the footsteps of her hero uncle Travis Manion who died in 2007 while serving in Iraq, writes Aaron Carter for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Manion was a three-sport standout at La Salle College High School who graduated from the Naval Academy. He died rescuing wounded Marines during an ambush.
Borek’s mother and Manion’s sister, Ryan, has noticed the similarities between the two for years.
“She’s had this kind of intensity and drive that I remember seeing a lot when we were younger,” she said.
Eighteen-year-old Borek recently underwent six weeks of “plebe summer,” which is designed to prepare incoming freshmen for the Naval Academy and all its physical and mental rigors. While some realize the academy is not for them and drop out, Borek was determined to make it through.
She knew the Navy would be her future since childhood.
“When you come here, you have a mission, and you have to work hard to come out and lead enlisted sailors, and that’s a really big responsibility,” said Borek.
