Over a hundred townhomes have been proposed in Richland Township, near the former Watson Johnson landfill, writes Jess Rohan for the Bucks County Courier Times.
The 54-acre site at 860 East Pumping Station Road, partially located on the landfill, has a history of soil and groundwater contamination and is under EPA supervision for PFAS, a hazardous “forever chemical.”
The development, named Richland Walk, is set to be sold to another developer for construction. However, the project has not progressed in township meetings since November 2022, when preliminary approval was recommended.
The site’s environmental covenant prohibits groundwater wells, and EPA monitoring continues to ensure the safety of the area.
Local residents are concerned about the potential environmental impact, increased flooding, and traffic congestion from the development. The project also faces scrutiny due to its proximity to the superfund site, which remains a focal point of community and environmental watchdogs.
As the development moves forward, the EPA and state DEP approvals are critical to ensuring that the project adheres to environmental safety standards. The next EPA review of the site’s remediation efforts is scheduled for 2026.
