Founded 24 years ago by Linda Arye in Yardley, Quilts for Kids repurposes discarded fabric into patchwork quilts for children in need, writes Nick Iadonisi for 6 ABC Philadelphia.
Arye, inspired by her own child’s hospital stay, aimed to provide comfort through quilts. “It’s there for not only comfort, but it’s there for friendship,” Arye says.
Despite initial doubts, the organization has become international, saving millions of pounds of fabric from landfills and comforting hundreds of thousands of children worldwide.
In 2007, as fabric donations dwindled, “Quilts for Kids” began purchasing materials, supported by fabric companies offering reduced prices and samples.
Today, volunteer quilters donate over 30,000 quilts annually, turning tears into smiles for countless children.
Support comes through fabric purchases, quilt adoptions for hospitals, and fundraising. Annual appeals also sustain the mission.
