Mira Nakashima and her husband, Jonathon Yarnall, took part in the recent dedication of the new Peace Pole at Pennswood Village in Newtown as dedicated speakers, writes Norval Reece for the Patch.

Earlier this year, Nakashima Woodworkers in New Hope sold President Joe Biden a one-of-a-kind walnut table as a Presidential gift to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Nakashima Woodworkers furniture is famous all around the world.

The State Dinner at the White House that honored Japan’s Prime Minister was attended by Nakashima, who designed the table, and Yarnall. It was a special night for Nakashima, who had been locked up in an internment camp 82 years ago.

The new Pennswood Village Peace Pole dedicated by Nakashima is a cedar pole with six sides that hold plaques of “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in 12 languages. The pole replaced the old, three-language pole that was dedicated at Pennswood Village back in 2001.

It is part of a vast network of over 230,000 peace poles that have been dedicated in more than 200 countries. The idea came from Japan, where the first pole was constructed in 1983.
