Bucks County non-profit United Way is addressing a significant challenge faced by workers with economic challenges through its program, “Learn to Invest in Your Future and Thrive” (LIFT), writes Vicky Diaz-Camacho for WHYY.

The initiative targets those classified as “Asset Limited, Income Restrained, Employed” (ALICE), providing crucial support to individuals like Rachel Lozano, a 26-year-old mother of three.

Lozano found herself in a difficult situation when her car broke down last fall, with no savings to afford a replacement.

Discovering LIFT was a turning point for her; the program offered her free financial education and connected her with a financial advisor and a low-interest car loan.

The United Way of Bucks County, under CEO Marissa Christie, identifies transportation as a crucial need in suburban settings.

LIFT, in collaboration with Penn Community Bank, offers tailored financial solutions like matched down payments and low-interest loans.

For Lozano, the benefits of LIFT went beyond mere financial aid; it also boosted her credit score and restored her sense of independence.
