South Philly Entertainment Complex’s Proposed Music Hall Aims For ‘Different Type of Music Experience’

As part of the proposed South Philadelphia entertainment complex, Comcast Spectacor and the Phillies intend to build a concert hall, writes Jeff Gammage for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Phil Laws, chief operating officer of Comcast Spectacor, said the goal is to make it “a different type of music experience.”

Its proposed 5,500- to 6,000-seat arena will fill a niche in Philadelphia, open different markets, attract new kinds of acts, and help bring in new revenue.

With a smaller venue, fans are closer to the stage and ticket prices are generally cheaper than at bigger arenas.

They also attract artists who are still popular but can no longer fill a building the size of the Wells Fargo Center, which seats about 21,000 people for concerts, and also performers gaining momentum to eventually perform at large venues, but are not quite there yet.

“That is a size that can accommodate a lot of the modern touring shows,” said Dave Brooks, senior director of live music and touring at Billboard magazine. “You can play that, come back and play the arena when you get bigger.”
