Prime Healthcare announced plans to convert Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol Township to nonprofit status by this summer.

Prime Healthcare announced plans to convert Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol Township and Philadelphia’s Roxborough Memorial Hospital to nonprofit status by this summer, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The move will place these hospitals under the ownership of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, which already manages 14 hospitals nationwide, including Suburban Community Hospital in East Norriton

This strategic shift aims to leverage the benefits of nonprofit status, such as tax exemptions and enhanced fundraising capabilities.

Dr. Sonia Mehta, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Prime Healthcare Region II, said that this transition will improve care coordination among the local medical centers and align them with statewide nonprofit policy initiatives.

Prime Healthcare, headquartered in Ontario, California, has invested nearly $100 million in its Philadelphia-area hospitals since their acquisition.

These investments have included the development of new emergency rooms, intensive care units, and upgraded IT infrastructure.

The conversion is expected to make these hospitals more attractive to nonprofit health systems, potentially easing future acquisition processes.

Prime Healthcare and its foundation currently operate 44 hospitals and over 300 outpatient locations across 14 states, handling more than 2.6 million patient visits annually.
