Pretzels are one of the most iconic foods in Pennsylvania, as the state’s annual consumption is roughly six times higher than the national average, writes Emily Kovach for PA Eats.

The state is rife with numerous spots to get delicious soft pretzels, beyond the soft pretzel chains like Philly Pretzel Factory or Auntie Anne’s or spots like Wawa or Sheetz.

Some small businesses serve top-tier pretzels, and Philadelphia has some noteworthy selections, as well.

One is Miller’s Twist inside Reading Terminal Market. A staple inside the market since 2008, Miller’s Twist has a wide selection of pretzels, from its buttery classic to its cinnamon and sour cream and onion. Customers can also order Pretzel Roll-Ups with savory fillings, such as the Philly Cheesesteak, or bacon, egg, and cheese.

Another solid choice is Center City Pretzel. Located on the edge of the Italian Market in South Philadelphia, you can purchase a pretzel right out of the oven for less than $1 apiece. 

It was temporarily closed to walk-in business after a 2022 fire, but it is expected to reopen in the spring.

The family-owned bakery has a menu that also includes pretzel bagels, loaves, nuggets, and specialty items like number- or letter-shaped pretzels.
