Rilling's Bucks County Bakery, a treasured establishment since 1936, is closing its doors this spring as the owners retire.

Rilling’s Bucks County Bakery, a treasured establishment since 1936, is closing its doors, writes Dino Ciliberti for The Patch.

The owners of the third-generation family business, nestled in the Davisville Shopping Center, are retiring.

They want to pursue other interests but may consider re-launching the bakery in another form. Rilling’s is set to close its doors on March 2.

The Warminster business is known for selling cakes, pies, seasonal breads, and other baked goods. It’s been ranked by Eater Philadelphia as one of Bucks County’s top bakeries.

Owner Michael Volz, and his sister and manager Diane Volz, spent most of their lives in a bakery.

The siblings told The Philadelphia Inquirer that many factors contributed to their decision to retire, including the pandemic changing customer behavior, labor shortages, and quality of ingredients.

“Life’s too short to be so stressed out,” Diane tells the Inquirer.

Michael also cited the “frustration” of day-to-day operations. He says after forty-four years of working six to seven days a week, he’s ready to retire.

The original Rilling’s Bakery was founded in Philly’s Brewerytown in 1936 by two German immigrants, Willy and Martha Rilling, writes Jenn Ladd for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The couple hopped all over the Philly region before settling in Pennypack Woods, where their grandchildren grew up. The Volzes (Michael and Diane’s parents) decided to open up a location in 1981, where Michael took over in 1989.
