A developer is revising its plans for what was originally a four-story, 160-unit apartment building in Newtown, writes Greg Vellner for The Reporter.

The project which will be constructed along South Sycamore Avenue is going to look more like a historic district with 40 fewer apartments. However, the town’s planning commission still had concerns over the revised development, named Corners at Newtown Place.

The commission expressed that the property, including a 300-foot-long building, would lead to density and traffic congestion. According to the commission, the structure is eight times larger, and two times longer than the regulations call for.

The developer’s president, Michael Markman, said that the building’s design and size fits the property. He says that maintaining single-story buildings would be hard to lease.

However, Planning Commission Chairperson Peggy Driscoll thought the new look was still crowded to create roadways. She suggested 60 apartments instead of the originally proposed 160, and the revised 120.

Markman said he would consider reducing the size of the project again.
