Pipersville non-profit Shamrock Reins helps veterans heal from traumatic events through equestrian activities, reports Gray Hall for 6 ABC.

The non-profit was started by Janet Brennan, who got the idea when she was working as an ER trauma nurse.

“Horses mirror your emotions. So, simply put, if you’re anxious, the horse will be anxious. If you’re calm, the horse will be calm,” says Brennan, whose father is a Vietnam veteran.

Zionsville native Jim Buszka says that he’s dealt with panic attacks, nightmares, and other emotional wounds since returning from the Gulf War.

He participated in the Shamrock Reins program seven years ago, and now he’s working there as an equine specialist.

Just one session can reduce symptoms substantially.

“It gives you coping skills and you learn how to calm your inner self,” he says.
