USA Today Ranks Philadelphia’s Mummers Parade as the Best Holiday Parade in the Nation
USA Today readers have voted the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia as the most festive and fun holiday parade in the nation, reports Alexandra Simon for CBS News Philadelphia.
Hosting its first edition in 1901, the Mummers Parade stands as one of the longest-running parades in the country.
Each year on January 1, collections of performers compete in five categories: Comics, Wench Brigades, Facies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades.
This year, the performers will strut around in costumes starting at 17th and Market Streets in Center City before turning at City Hall and heading south along Broad Street and Washington Avenue.
This is the second time that a Philadelphia tradition has found itself on a USA Today top 10 list this season.
The Miracle on South 13th Street ranked number 10 on the list of the nation’s best holiday light shows earlier this year.
The Mummers Parade beat out other festive holiday parades across the nation, which include America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit; the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City; and the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival in Chicago, among others.
