Bristol Borough Seeks Flood Solutions Without Losing Scenic Riverfront

By

Nestled along the banks of the Delaware River, Bristol capitalizes on its scenic vistas by hosting numerous festivals, concerts and special events in its riverside parks. Located just 30 minutes from Center City Philadelphia, the historic town’s waterfront draws people for boating, hiking, picnics and other outdoor activities.

Bristol Borough would need to build a $15 million flood wall to keep flood waters from submerging the Mill Street municipal parking lot, writes Peg Quann for the Bucks County Courier Times.

However, while that would solve regular flooding issues at the Mill Street Wharf and the municipal parking lot, it would also cost the historic river town’s Mill Street business district its view.

People would not see the river “unless they walked on top of the wall,” said borough Manager James Dillon.

To avoid this, the borough has continued to look for other ways to control flooding.

Bristol Borough had already replaced drains, checked drain valves, and repaved the parking lot thanks to a $1 million grant. But Dillon said it will not prevent water from overflowing the site when the river rises and low-lying areas begin to flood.

The borough has recently received another grant that was used to commission an Army Corps of Engineers study of its hydrology at the Otter and Adams Hollow creeks to determine ways that could help keep water out.
