George Nakashima Woodworkers in New Hope is well known worldwide thanks to the amazing works of its bespoke designers and artisanal furniture makers, writes Rory Evans for Esquire.

The company is run by Mira Nakashima, who is continuing the legacy first started by her late father, George, in 1945.

The work of the family business has recently been honored in a video short produced by Watches of Switzerland.

Nakashima used the opportunity to showcase several buildings and workspaces of the George Nakashima Woodworkers Complex.

This has now been put on the National Historic Landmark registry for the “unique legacy of craftsmanship and design excellence” created by its founder.

For each individual design project, the workshop custom-mills sustainably sourced hardwoods. Senior designer Jaysond Neill then works on a slab of wood to bring out its inner beauty.

“Our work has begun with respect for fine materials, developed and shaped by fine craftsmanship refined by many skilled hands and eyes over many years,” said Nakashima.

“We treasure the skills of handcraftsmanship, which have been passed down in Japan, Europe, and the rest of the world.”
