Langhorne General Motors employees who’ve been on strike since Sept. 22 will see significant changes if the proposed contract with United Auto Workers is approved, writes Lizzy McLellan Ravitch for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 83 employees, all members of UAW Local 2177, earned a base pay of $16.67 per hour under the old contract. Highest-paid members earned $31.78 per hour.

Not only will this deal boost the entry-level wage to $25 per hour and the top rate to over $41 per hour, but it will also eliminate pay tiers.

General Motors and the United Auto Workers union previously negotiated in 2019 following a 40-day strike, but many Langhorne General Motors employees voted against the deal.

They argued that the deal appealed more to manufacturing workers instead of warehouse workers at distribution centers. It also offered better pay increases for those hired before 2015.

If ratified, the newly negotiated contract is set to expire in May of 2028.

According to Daniel Vicente, the regional director for UAW, the new deal would be “life-changing.”
