Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication and Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts will soon be housed in a single new structure, writes Jake Blumgart for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The new facility will be located at 1830 North Broad Street, on the west side, which currently holds primarily athletic and recreational uses on campus.

The area was previously proposed as the site of a new on-campus football stadium for the Temple Owls football team. However, it will instead serve an entirely new purpose.

“The existing Klein and CPCA facilities are very antiquated,” said James Templeton, Temple’s director of architectural services.

While the proposed football stadium had largely negative reactions, many local groups are in favor of this new proposal.

As part of the project, Temple would be extending Polett Walk across 15th and Broad Streets, while the new building would straddle that extension and make it more accessible to the public.

“One of the big focuses of the project has to be on maximizing its positive impact on the public spaces that surround the building,” said Colin Koop, design partner at international architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

The finished project could also see added lighting, extensive plantings, benches, and more bike parking.
