Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick recently introduced a bill to change the name of the Washington Crossing post office to the Susan C. Barnhart Post Office.

The Washington Crossing community is rallying to honor one of the victims of recent flash flooding that devasted the area, writes Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.

When historic rainfall caused flash flooding in Bucks County in July, five adults and two children lost their lives. One of them was Susan Barnhart, who worked for nearly two years at the post office on River Road in the township.

Many customers still remember often seeing her smiling face behind the front counter.

“A blessing,” said Bob Stevenson, a regular at the bank. “Sunshine. Something somebody that you’d like to walk into when you see their face in the morning. Just lightens you up.”

Now, that same post office could bear her name one day.

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick recently introduced a bill to change the name of the post office to the Susan C. Barnhart Post Office. The proposal has already received strong support from the community.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” said Frank Gunther. “She’s a hero. She’s a wonderful person. Everybody loved her. Everybody loved seeing her and her dog and it’s so tragic that she died in that storm.”
