Adam Shapiro, an Abington native and actor on “The Bear” has been feeding the picketing lines in Los Angeles, writes Esther Zuckerman for the Wall Street Journal.

Since the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May, Shapiro has been providing soft pretzels from his company Shappy Pretzel Co. to feed the picketers. SAG-AFTRA, a group that he is a member of, has also joined the picket line.

“Just never in a million years would I think that people would be yelling pretzels at me — and I would be yelling it back at them,” he said.

“I was like, I’m going to go picket anyway, I might as well show up with pretzels,” he said, explaining why he wanted to help. “It’s my industry. It’s my people.”

Shapiro initially donated the pretzels himself, but not long after he started, showrunners, actors, and producers began to ask to sponsor Shappy Pretzel drops. Sponsors have included Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Fallon.

Shapiro first started experimenting with baking his hometown treat when he was home during the pandemic. Now he runs Shappy Pretzel Co. out of Los Angeles’ Diamond Bakery.

Find out what who else has been helping out at the picket lines in the Wall Street Journal.
