Yardley Celebrating Juneteenth With Ceremony, Collaboration with Local Museum
A town in Bucks County will be celebrating Juneteenth with a local organization dedicated to sharing the area’s and country’s history.
Yardley Borough will be celebrating the holiday alongside the Gather Place Museum, located at 188 South Canal Street at the old African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Church in the Historic District. The celebrations will be held on June 19 in front of the Borough Hall at 6:30 PM.
Councilman David Appelbaum will be joined by Shirley Corsey, executive director of Gather Place, to present a history lesson and stories about the holiday and its impact on American history.
The museum’s property was built in 1877 by African Americans who crossed over the nearby Delaware River and has always been owned by African Americans for the past 146 years.
Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday on June 19, 2021. It had been celebrated in small areas of the country since 1866, originating in the area of Galveston, Texas.
