The area was once rife with poultry farms.

A popular area of Bucks County was once a prime location for chicken farming, and a local historical society discussed the facts of the industry.

The Doylestown Historical Society recently discussed the area’s past as a major putty producer. Known for once being rife with farmland, Bucks County’s agricultural past is an interesting facet of the area.

The Pine Run Poultry Yards, shown in the picture above back in 1876, as owned by Dr. Alexander Dickie, a physician practicing in Doylestown. The farm was located near the current Water Wheel Tavern at 4424 Old Easton Road.

The Nostaw Poultry Yards were located at 277 Maple Avenue and owned by George Watson. In 1913 the business advertised “Cockerel and pullet mated pens of the best standard strains.”

Cecil J. Toor, a professor at a college that is now Delaware Valley University, owned and operated a chicken farm at 202 Harvey Avenue back in 1923. He later opened the Sandy Ridge Poultry Farm.

These are just a few of the local stories of poultry farmers in the area.
