The farm property was once owned by the musuem's namesake.

The group that is working to create a museum in Doylestown to honor Oscar Hammerstein’s work is making a push to raise the final $500,000 to buy Highland Farm on East Street, according to a staff report for the TAPinto Doylestown.

The Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theater Education Center announced recently the creation of a matching gift challenge for donations received by August 1, for up to $500,000. The funds would help the group reach the $2 million required to acquire the property on East Street that would be the home of the museum.

Earlier this year, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of the mega-popular Broadway musical “Hamilton”, gave the center a significant gift to help with the creation of the museum.

Hammerstein lived at Highland Farm with his family for the last two decades of his life. The farm inspired him to create some of the best-known musicals of all time, including “The Sound of Music”, “Carousel” and “The King and I”. It is also believed that he wrote the famous lyrics to “Oklahoma” at Highland Farm.
