Max Swan, a saxophonist, singer, songwriter, and producer who grew up in Perkasie, is working on his newest project he refers to as a “spiritual event,” writes Rahman Wortman for WXPN.

The two-part project was recorded live in St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Kensington. The aim was to capture himself and his band performing live in an environment where they thrive.

“So much of what happened in those recordings could not have happened if it wasn’t in that space,” he said.

Swan learned music at a young age, thanks to a  band director who recognized the talent in him.

“Everybody has a different relationship with teachers, everybody’s got good stories and bad stories, but I could not have had a better foundation for music,” said Swan.

Over the years, his own style has been shaped and influenced by many albums.

“The one that always has come to mind first is Talking Book by Stevie Wonder,” he said. “That was one of the first CDs I bought myself, and I listened through it on repeat for years. Another one is Brian McNight. I was huge, huge on Brian McNight.”
