The Delta Dental Community Care Foundation has awarded the Harcum College Dental Program with $38,000 earmarked for dental students who show academic progress and financial need.

The Community Care Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Delta Dental of California, has previously been a supporter of the dental clinic by providing funding for supplies and equipment. The funds have allowed the college to offer affordable dental care to the community and also an experiential education for students.

This relationship has grown to include four dental hygiene students being awarded The Delta Dental Oral Education Program scholarship.

“This increased support from Delta Dental to directly help students is an exciting development,” said Harcum President Jon Jay DeTemple. “Every scholarship is a ray of light.”

Making a Difference

Scholarships are a difference-maker for Harcum students.

According to Institutional Research data, 97 percent of all full-time students receive financial aid, and 70 percent of the student body identifies as a minority.

Workplace Readiness

With associate’s degrees in Dental Hygiene, graduates of Harcum’s program readily enter the workforce in the profession.

“We are proud to partner with Harcum College and support their mission to educate and train the next generation of dental practitioners,” said Kenzie Ferguson, vice president of foundation and corporate social responsibility for Delta Dental of California. “The partnership helps us achieve our broader mutual goals of bettering the oral health and wellness of our communities by fostering greater inclusivity and increasing educational opportunities for those training for careers in the dental field.”

Harcum graduates are in demand with area dental offices who hold their education and hands-on training in high regard.

The job outlook for dental hygienists and dental assistants is projected to grow 11 percent through 2030, faster than average for all occupations.
