The school district has been ensconced in several related controversies over the past few years.

In one of the latest controversies to come out of a Bucks County school district, a librarian is being forced to remove a quote from a famous writer. Andrew Lapin wrote about the incident for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

A librarian at Central Bucks High School South in Warrington was ordered by the principal to remove a quote by Nobel Prize-winning author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel because it violated the school’s “neutrality” policy,

The quote is from Wiesel’s Nobel acceptance speech in 1986 and reads: “I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

The quote clashed with the district’s controversial new policy that bans teachers from engaging in “advocacy activities” or putting on display signs of “any partisan, political, or social policy issue.”

“If I didn’t take it down, I knew there would be consequences that could impact me,” said Matt Pecic, the librarian.

The district allowed the school to put the quote back up the following day because Wiesel’s memoir “Night” is a part of its curriculum.

The district also apologized “for any hurt or concerns this has caused, particularly for those in the Jewish community.”
