Known for its diversity of wildlife, a fish that has been seen around Bucks County faces potential extinction due to a longtime practice. Colleen O’Dea wrote about the fish for NJ Spotlight News.
The Atlantic sturgeon, a fish native to the Delaware River, has been added to the federal endangered species list in recent years.
One of the major reasons for this unfortunate listing is the decreasing oxygen levels in parts of the river where they reside, as well as overfishing practices that have plagued the sturgeon population for years.
“Our Atlantic sturgeon population has been at this very low level for a number of years now and our government officials continue to resist taking action to upgrade the standards and protect the sturgeon, even though they literally hang at the brink of extinction,” said Maya van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper.
Last year, the Delaware River Basin Commission petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to aid in cleaning up the waters of nearby rivers in order to save the fish.
