2022 was a roller coaster of a year. A looming recession and inflation fueled anxieties about careers and personal finances. An ongoing pandemic contributed to a shift in workplace culture, that affected how companies operated. Here’s what workplace trends we can expect in 2023, according to online education site Emeritus.org.
1. Hiring and Retention Issues
From “The Great Resignation” to COVID-exacerbated shortages to “quiet-quitting” many companies have struggled to find or retain employees. According to Emeritus, 4 million Americans quit their jobs in October, but 10.3 million positions were open.
Remote work is becoming more popular. And even though some companies are requiring their employees to go back to the office, many are experimenting with the hybrid model.
3. Employee Well-Being
Work-life-balance and mental health are the primary focuses of many organizations. Especially with worker shortages, efforts to make retain employee happiness are essential.
4. Talent Shortages
Many industries are finding it difficult to find qualified employees for certain positions, especially in tech or construction.
5. Focus on Skills Over Jobs
Due to talent shortages companies care more about what skills an applicant can offer, as opposed to their work experience. Up-skilling or re-skilling are important if someone wants to take their career to the next level.
Climate change is not going away, especially if companies do nothing to improve their footprints. Sustainability efforts for organizations would also require collaboration with employees.
