Despite Inflation Costs, Silverdale-Based Farm Sees Strong Turkey Demand for Thanksgiving
A Bucks County farm is working hard to make sure that local residents have access to the most important part of any Thanksgiving meal. Nicole Leonard wrote about the local farm for WHYY.
Despite rising inflation costs and deadly avian flu, Bolton Turkey Farm in Silverdale is seeing a strong turkey demand for Thanksgiving. The farm raises around 10,000 turkeys annually. According to Torrie Bolton, the family farm will most likely sell over 4,000 of these birds for the upcoming holidays.
“We do maybe a tenth [of that number] at Christmas, because people eat other things,” she said. “But everyone wants a turkey at Thanksgiving.”
Once all turkey orders for Thanksgiving have been picked up at the farm, the owners will start marking and selecting birds they plan to use to breed more turkeys for next year.
“It starts all over again,” said Bolton.
She also has a recommendation when it comes to the cooking of fresh birds: do it upside down.
“So that the juices that are in your back run down into your white meat and keep it nice and juicy,” she said. “Also, your thighs and your leg is where it often doesn’t get finished quite as much, so if you’re upside down, that’s closer to the heat source and it seems to work out well.”
